This outfitter operates their Mt Nyala safaris in both the Arusi Mt's and the Bale Mt's at altitudes anywhere from 6,000 to 11,000 feet. Their Odo Bulo and Damaro concessions are located in Bale Province, just southeast of Goba and Bale National Park and one long days drive southeast of Addis Ababa. It is preferable to charter flights from Addis to an airstrip within an hours drive of either camp. The permanent camps have running water (both hot and cold), indoor toilets and showers. Damaro begins at 6,000 feet and goes up to 8,500 feet. Odo Bulo, which is adjacent, goes all the way up to 11, 000 feet. Most of the terrain is steep, heavy old-growth forest with the areas above 10,000 feet thinning to the beginnings of heather and lobelia.
Another area, The Munessa concession, is 7,000 feet in elevation and is comprised of old forest and new, cultivated cedar forest. This area is 4 hours from Addis Ababa and is in the Arusi Province. This is the area where the new world record 18"+ Menelik's bushbuck was taken. In October of 2010 a 43 ½ Mt. Nyala was also taken in this area. The outfitter only conducts 3 safaris per year in this area, so it sells out years in advance. Due to its low elevation and close cover, the area is huntable year round. Tented Camps are used for this area.
Hunters can hunt year round in Munessa and Damaro and the lower sections of Odo Bulo because they don't produce fog when the rains come. Several Mt. Nyala over 40" have been taken in each consession over the last few years including a 42" in Damaro and a 41 ½" in Odo Bulo. Mt. Nyala is the main species hunted on these safaris, but a very healthy population of Menelik's bushbuck is also present. The hunting is conducted both on foot and, in the higher areas, by horseback. Often spike camps are used. The thick forest means that normally shots are less than 200 yards: however, one must be prepared for the possibility of a longer cross canyon shot in excess of 350 yards. Other species found in the mountain concessions include Spotted Hyena, Abyssinian Bohor Reedbuck, East African Bush Duiker, Leopard, Giant Forest Hog, and Colobus monkey. There are limited license quotas for these species.
Typically, Mt. Nyala hunting consists of getting up before daybreak and trying to be at a good spot for glassing over long distances. If, after a few days in the area close enough to stay at the main camp no suitable bull has been seen, hunters begin fly camping at further extremities in order to get a better chance at a trophy Mt. Nyala. These are difficult but rewarding hunts, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful.
